Are you English & Proud

There is a forgotten, nay almost forbidden word, which means more to me than any other. That word is ENGLAND

Winston Churchill

The demise of an English culture which was homogeneous for a thousand years or more has gathered pace to such an extent that England as a national entity is in question.

Up to very recently history has always given the English a sense of themselves from Agincourt to the Spanish Armada, the Somme and the Blitz. Even now the attitudes of our boys in Afghanistan are probably not that different from the troops the night before Agincourt or the Somme, they are still a relatively homogeneous group from this multicultural nation. The main change is about attitudes towards them.

British soldiers are now not seen as having the status they once had as savours of the nation. They are demoralised and unsure of their role in society. The military covenant is now under threat. The bond between the people of the nation and its protectors, set up by Wellington is in question and the Royal British Legion had to campaign to get this clarified.

Those who had a clear role in protecting the culture and way of life of the nation is under threat because no-one knows what that way of life should be or indeed what the culture is. In the past our forefathers never had that problem they were very clear.
